The hypocrisy of funding Planned Parenthood

Bloomington Herald-Times, July 6, 2010

To the Editor:

The June 16 Bloomington City Council meeting was an exercise in hypocrisy. After vigorously defending the city's boycott of Arizona, the councilors gave several thousand dollars to Planned Parenthood.

Sadly, the Herald-Times didn't find it worthwhile to report that the city gave corporate welfare to Planned Parenthood, which reported an $85 million profit in its most recent fiscal report and took in over $1 billion in revenue.

What made it worse is that Planned Parenthood's own application for funds to distribute birth control states that "it is estimated that 14,930 women between the ages of 13 and 44 are in need of publicly funded contraceptives" in Monroe County.

It should be obvious that 13 year olds do not need publicly funded contraceptives, because it is illegal for anyone to have sex with a 13 year old girl. What these girls need is for the sexual predators abusing them to be locked up, rather than cover up the abuse with birth control.

This comes less than two years after the Bloomington Planned Parenthood was mired in a sex abuse scandal. The Bloomington City Council is now officially on record as endorsing sexual abuse, and they did it with your tax dollars.
