Reject Planned Parenthood's funding request

Herald-Times, June 1, 2006

To the Editor:

The local Planned Parenthood has applied for corporate welfare from city government for the eighth consecutive year, asking for $3,050 toward renovating their front office. In years past, PP claimed that the grants they were requesting did not affect their abortion business. Is that the case this year? A remodeling of the office would seem to affect all aspects of PP's business, including abortion services.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana's web site proudly announces their "Gathering of Goddesses and the Mere Mortals who Love Them" event (which featured tarot card readings and psychics) in April of this year. Does funding the local PP branch, given this openly pagan event, violate the "separation of church and state" that the local Left claims to support? Would the Bloomington City Council be willing to fund an openly Christian organization like the Crisis Pregnancy Center? (Giving tax money to the CPC is a bad idea anyway, but that is not the point.)

Once again, Planned Parenthood has made a mockery of the John Hopkins social services funding process. PP does not need this funding: what PP wants is a political endorsement from city government. The Bloomington City Council should reject Planned Parenthood's cynical political games.
