Personal character vs. public policy is a false choice

Which is better, a government leader who is faithful in his marriage, or a government leader who is faithful in protecting the innocent and the nation? Which should we choose? My answer is this: I reject the premise, because it is a false choice. Our goal should be to have a leader who is faithful to both. There is no need to choose one or the other. There are plenty of men who would do both.

Now, let me be clear: I am not saying we should not vote for Donald Trump. I voted for Darrell Castle in 2016 and I am voting for Trump in 2020. I am very open about my support for re-electing Trump, and I went out of my way to wear my "Make American Great Again" hat when I marched in the 2018 and 2019 Fourth of July Parades in Bloomington.

We have a man with a long history of grossly immoral behavior, who has no shame about his many past sins and who continues to behave boorishly. We should call on him to be better, and we should call on his inner circle to restrain his worst impulses. He should be publicly and privately rebuked when necessary. But Trump is the only realistic choice we have for 2020. We are not going to have a different Republican as our nominee. We can choose to vote for his good policies, or we can choose the corrosive identity politics and socialist policies of the Democrats.

Ultimately, we have to live in the world as it is, not as we wish it was. Donald Trump is not the best person for the job, but he will be the 2020 GOP nominee. And based on what he has done so far on policy he has earned a second term. Trump has been strong on restricting abortion, protecting religious freedom, passing a significant tax cut, reducing burdensome regulations and continuing to push for building a needed wall on our southern border. He still needs to be better, behave professionally and repent of the sins in his personal life. Christians must call on him to do that.
