Consent is not enough

By Scott Tibbs, January 15, 2019

As Christians, we need to be able to read the stitches on the fastball. Not every Christian will have the same level of discernment, but we all should have some level of discernment. We should pray for more discernment and we should cultivate what we already have. We certainly should not despise those who have extra discernment and can see where the culture is going before we get there, and warn us about it.

There are both good and bad things about the #MeToo movement, and the emphasis on consent is good. Too many men (especially rich and powerful men) feel they have a "right" to take what they want, and women's wishes are overridden. Women should never be forced to do anything against their will.

But while consent is necessary, consent is not enough.

For example, we have age of consent laws for a reason. In our legal system, a 14 year old girl cannot legally "consent" to sex with a 30 year old man. She is not mentally and emotionally mature enough to consent to sex, and the adult man is rightly prosecuted for statutory rape. But in California, the legislature is undermining their own age of consent laws by pushing "affirmative consent" in high schools. (California's age of consent is 18.) Let's not pretend that is not the first step to lowering or even abolishing the age of consent.

But while we are still hanging on to a shred of sanity with regard to age of consent for sexual activity, we are annihilating age of consent with "gender identity" ideology. Just as a 14 year old cannot legally consent to sex, a 14 year old should not be allowed to legally consent to life-altering "gender reassignment" medical procedures, whether harmful chemicals that disrupt body chemistry or surgical mutilation.

It boggles my mind how anyone can support age of consent laws for sexual activity but not support minimum age requirements for radical medical procedures to change a child's physical gender - and much younger than 14 years old. What if a confused teenager changes his or her mind at 19? We have gone insane.

All Christians need to speak boldly against this horrific sexual abuse of children. Make no mistake about it: Radical "gender reassignment" of prepubescent children is sexual abuse and should be prosecuted as such. We also need to pray for God to send revival upon this nation and repentance for our rebellion.
