Representative Welch,

I greatly appreciate that you sponsored the amendment in the Indiana House to forbid governmental recognition of homosexual marriage. As a philosophical libertarian, I believe that consenting adults should be able to have a relationship of they so choose. I believe that choice is fundamentally inconsistent with the sexual morality laid out in Scripture, but it is not my business to force that on others so long as no one is harmed.

The amendment you sponsored last year to ban homosexual marriage matches that philosophy very well. Indiana would not forbid homosexual relationships. Indiana would not, however, put the state stamp of approval on homosexual relationships by recognizing them as "marriages".

I encourage the representative for my district, Matt Pierce, to go along with your sensible proposal. I hope Vi Simpson also supports your position in the State Senate.

You said last year that you answered to a "higher power" as your amendment was considered by the House. I applaud your recognition that Jesus is the authority that drives how you vote.

President George W. Bush is proposing a Constitutional amendment to ban homosexual marriage at the federal level. But amending the federal Constitution takes time; this is why it is important that people like you are helping President Bush protect marriage at the state level. The fact that a Democratic State Representative is supporting the initiative of a Republican President shows that this crosses party lines.

Thank you for your support for traditional marriage.
