How many Columbines will it take?

UNBELIAVABLE. Read on:

A mentally disabled Steamboat Springs girl filed a lawsuit in federal court Friday saying the school district failed to protect her from four classmates who forced her to perform sex acts on them...

In 2001, the four boys began harassing and intimidating her at and outside school and she was forced to perform sex acts on them, the lawsuit says.

At one point, the girl said she told a school counselor that she was afraid of the boys and the counselor said she would have to handle it on her own, the lawsuit says.
While I agree that the little monsters who brutalized this girl should be severely punished (can you say "life in prison?") there is no question there should be serious punishment directed at the "school".

First of all, every single "school" employee who turned a blind eye to this should be fired and permanently banned from working in government schools in Colorado. Second, the counselor should face prison time herself for being an accomplice to rape. Third, this government school (and all government schools) should abandon the myth that everyone has a "right" to an education and expel students who are violent to other students. I really could care less about the "rights" of little monsters who torment other children. I am more concerned with the rights of kids who just want to go to school.

This is why Columbine happened, folks. "Zero-tolerance" policies toward weapons and increased security do not get to the root of the problem, which is that government schools do not take bullying seriously. Do we have to have another massacre for people to finally wake up? How many Columbines will it take?

Update: December 3, 2005

Are you ready for Columbine II?

This is beyond evil.

A schoolgirl cancer victim had her hair set on fire by a boy after it had grown back following four years of intensive chemotherapy, it emerged today.

Bianca Powell, 11, of Morriston, Swansea, south Wales, frantically beat down the flames with her hands as she ran screaming into school.

Police were called to Pontarddulais Primary School as a result of the alleged attack on Monday.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed pending further investigations.
I addressed this topic last month, when I wrote: "This is why Columbine happened, folks. "Zero-tolerance" policies toward weapons and increased security do not get to the root of the problem, which is that government schools do not take bullying seriously."

The Columbine killers were targets of merciless bullying, and they responded with violence. Nothing can excuse what they did, but the government school they attended beard part of the responsibility for the massacre because they did not take bullying seriously.

It is time for people to wake up. I can virtually guarantee that this little monster had a history of tormenting students that goes back long before this assault. If that is the case, he should never have been in the school to torture this girl to begin with. Obviously, there has to be an investigation to prove what happened, but once it is established who set this poor girl on fire, he should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Update: April 20, 2005

Remembering Columbine

Six years ago today, two teenagers who had been tormented by bullies for years walked into their high school and slaughtered several classmates. It remains the worst school shooting in history.

We still have not learned the lessons of Columbine, and it is only a matter of time until we have another one. Nothing can excuse what the Columbine killers did on April 20, 1999, but there is no doubt that bullying played a large role in the massacre. (See previous blog posts here and here.) Read on:
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A 16-year-old disabled girl was punched and forced to engage in videotaped sexual acts with several boys in a high school auditorium as dozens of students watched, according to witnesses.
But it gets worse. Far, far worse.
School officials found the girl bleeding from the mouth. An assistant principal cautioned the girl's father against calling 911 to avoid media attention, the statements said. The girl's father called police.
If the account in the article is true, the "assistant principal" should be sent to a super-maximum sexurity prison for the rest of his life. He is every bit as evil as the monsters who brutally raped a disabled girl. Actually, I take that back. He is worse.

Our law enforcement system owes it to every single law-abiding citizen to send the "assistant principal" to prison, because he is clearly too dangerous to be allowed in civilized society where he can victimize more people. And people wonder why so many parents are abandoning the government school system.

Another Columbine is coming, folks. It is just a matter of time. The only way to avoid more massacres is for us to get our collective heads out of the sand and realize just how serious bullying is and the damage it causes.
