The face of evil revealed in Russia

The events in Russia have given us an appropriate definition of evil. What kind of monsters take a bunch of school children hostage and then blow them up?

At one time I had sympathy for the rebels in Chechnya, attempting to gain self-determination after living under the rule of an imperialistic invader. If they were fighting a guerrilla war against the Russian Army, they would still have that sympathy.

Blowing up civilian airplanes, murdering innocents in a theater, and slaughtering children has evaporated any sympathy the Chechens once had. Russia's President Putin is right: this is another front in the War on Terror. The U.S. should aid russia in their battle against these monsters, because Russia is fighting the same enemy we are fighting, the same people who took down the Twin Towers.

The War on Terror is not about US or Russian policy, or other political matters. This is a religious war, and the Islamists are arguably more dangerous than Soviet Communism. I do not recall Communists killing themselves in order to get a chance to murder innocents. Islamists, however, are more than willing to kill themselves in order to kill the "infidels", because in Islam that is a guaranteed way to enter Paradise.

Update: September 6, 2004.

More on the massacre in Russia: What about the "justness" of cause the Chechen "rebels" are fighting for? I understand the effects of Russian/Soviet imperialism. I rememeber talking about this war ten years ago in my Russian Politics class at Indiana University. I supported independence for Chechnya because of Russian/Soviet imperialism.

However, when Chechen "rebels" resort to murdering children, I find it very difficult to sympathize with their cause. I assume most of the people in Chechnya don't support the monsters who carried out this act, monsters who should burn in the Lake of Fire for all eternity. But the more the Chechen "rebels" ally themselves with and imitate the tactics of the people who took down the World Trade Center, the more I think we should take the view that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", just as we did when we allied ourselves with Stalin in WWII.

We need not intervene militarily to help Russia deal with this segment of Osama's band of thugs. There are other ways to help our ally in the War on Terror.
